COMPLIANCE

In Australia and internationally, the use of glass is experiencing a resurgence in building design and general construction applications.

While the development of standards moves more slowly than the creative arm of the industry, the involvement of technical specialists at the design stage is imperative. Solutions developed with this level of collaboration perform better, are stronger, more reliable and safer.

Sky Glass solutions for frameless balustrades or architectural applications are a great example of where design and safety can intersect.

Toughened glass

'Annealed' glass is heated to 600-700°C and then cooled rapidly. This gives the glass enhanced strength and thermal properties, making it 4 to 5 times stronger than ordinary annealed glass. When broken, toughened glass disintegrates into small square fragments minimising the risk of injury. Also called 'safety' glass - AS1288 recommends use of this glass in applications where there is a risk of human impact.

Bevelite Glass manufactures toughened glass on premise under license to relevant Australian standards and is quality assured. We take extra time and care to ensure our toughened glass has less bowing, less roller wave and better fragmentation performance, far in excess of Australian Standards requirements.

Uses
Tabletops, splashbacks, windows, doors, shower screens, balustrades, pool fences, architectural

Standards
Toughened glass is manufactured to:

  • AS/NZS 2208 - Safety Glazing Materials for use in Buildings (human impact considerations)
  • AS/NZS 2080 - Safety Glass for Land Vehicles
  • AS/NZS 4667 - Quality Requirements for Cut to Size and Processed Glass

Custom Laminated Glass

Stronger than toughened glass - Custom Laminate is two or more sheets of toughened glass permanently fused by an 'inter layer' of plastic film. If breakages occur, the pieces remain adhered to the plastic film, further reducing the possibility of an injury. Custom Laminate is also useful for minimising UV light transfer and noise.

Australian Standards recommend use of Custom Laminated glass products where a single toughened glass panel may be 'breached'.

Uses
Sky Glass products (frameless balustrades and architectural applications, such as floors, overhead glazing, facades and Performance Glass (Low E, reflective, thermal etc).

Toughened laminated glass products must be specified and certified by an approved engineer. Bevelite Glass provides access to engineering services as required.

Standards
Custom Laminated glass is manufactured to AS/NZS 2208 - Safety Glazing Materials for Use in Buildings (Human Impact Considerations). Glass manufactured outside this standard can be produced and will be tested to these guidelines (and typically will be a superior safety product) but will not carry the standards marking.

Bevelite custom laminated glass is supplied, conforming to:

  • AS/NZS 4667 - Quality Requirements for Cut to Size/processed Glass
  • AS1288 - Glass in Buildings - Selection and Installation
  • AS1170.2 - Structural Design Actions - Wind
  • AS/NZS 4586 - Slip Resistance Classifications of New Pedestrian Surface Material (for treads/flooring products)
